RE: RV Stolen From Forest River - help please

I can't believe that they didn't have security cameras at this repair facility. Llocal car dealers have security cameras in their repair facilities because they don't want their parts walking out the door let alone the customer's car! I have security cameras for my business. You get some really pretty images of unknown people committing crimes but very little else. They normally don't wear identification prominently displayed, usually are smart enough to wear a hooded sweatshirt so you can't see their face, and your observing the pictures well after the fact of the loss. Interesting. The theft required a vehicle, supposedly with license plates. Security cameras placed at various locations and heights would have helped dramatically, in my opinion.

RE: Class C MPG

I have a '94 22ft C on a Ford chassis with the 460 EFI. Have done the 3" exhaust line, removed the cat converter, Banks Air Flow, K/N air filter. Run reg fuel. On cruise at 55 mph I get 13.5 mpg on the flats with no side/head winds. I don't tow, run full of grub, water, kayak, wine, bourbon, 2 adults. Gary Haupt Gary, Are you using Imperial or US gal for your milage?

RE: Not the same old fuel price topic

Going slightly tangential, are gas prices the highest they've ever been? Adjusted for inflation, that is.

RE: Costco Sunforce 160 watt kit and Upgrading my coach...

1. Google "the 12volt side of life" 2. Yes, you need the Xantrex 3. You don't like your noisy built-in generator? Then replacing it with a quiet one is more expensive than buying 4 golf cart batteries. 4. If you replace the generator, go built-in, not portable. 5. With your power budget, I would get 6 batteries.

RE: No more runs to Juarez for us!

I believe the Op warned about Juarez, Laredo and Tijuana. I believe the OP warned about Mexico.

RE: Have you hit a Deer with your RV ? Please give details.

Late one night in Texas on I-10, my wife wondered why the only other traffic on the road were trucks. Then we hit the deer. The DPS officer said, " Yup, there's more dead deer in Texas than live ones. And the dead ones are all on roads." That was the last time we drove at night in Texas!

RE: solar panel

John, Make sure you get a high end controller and AC charger for your batteries. If you want to use a generator as little as possible I would recommend installing golf cart batteries.

RE: Full-time in my Escalade, what to do with all my stuff?

I think you should wait at least 3 hours after your coffee before you post. ;)

RE: Pork side ribs

Marinade in BBQ sauce with a bit of beer for 4 hours. Then pressure cook (with marinade and half cup of water) for 10 min. Then on the BBQ wrapped in foil ( with as much juice as you can fit in) for half hour on medium. Then sear them for a couple of minutes out of the foil. I'm sure the oven will work great if you take them out of the foil the last 5 minutes.

RE: To slide or Not slide????

I will never buy another slide RV. The only reason I had one was because DW and I lived at an RV park full time for 6 years. We met a lot of folks in that time with slide rigs, and listened to their interesting slidemares from their last trip. Also, our RV repair guy/friend loved slide outs. He bought a hot tub and a newer truck because he fixed so many. One day we stopped at Camping World on I-5 and one third of the rigs in the shop were in for slide repairs! If you go camping, then camp. Don't bring your condo.

RE: Solar v Generator

One more thing. Camping in the summer made a huge difference. We could stay on Vancouver Island ( under trees) for 3 weeks and only drain to 50%. In the Baja we could go for 2 months, no problem. The only thing we discovered was that the Trojans need a good "blast" of AC charge once every couple of months to bring them up to 100%.

RE: Solar v Generator

Vicki, I had a TT for years and only boondocked. Never had a genny, I hate them. One 80w solar panel and four Trojan T 105's is all we needed. 450 amp-hours of power. Of course I sprung for an expensive StatPower charger/inverter because the standard RV "boiler" charger was very hard on batteries. We camped in the winter at Whistler for 4 days at a time and only drew the batt's down to 50%. Not bad, considering every day was cloudy. And that included 2 showers a day, CD player, halogen reading lamps on for 4 hrs/day and the furnace running. Mind you it wasn't that cold, and we always burned many candles in the evening. It was always above 0C. You might be boondocking for longer periods, though. And your trailer might not have as much room for batteries or solar panels. One option is to get heavy gauge wire and move one unfixed panel to a sunny spot.

RE: My first RV mistake

Way back when we had a TT, I decided to spiff up the van with new alloy wheels. Didn't read the fine print stating "come back for nut retorquing after 150 kms." Of course, 300 km later on a windy mountain road the van starts vibrating, DW says, "Could it be the new wheels?" "Don't be silly. It must be a u-joint." Ten seconds later-KABOOM! All hell breaks loose. In my side mirror, I see a tire rolling across 3 lanes and over the embankment. Much traffic had been there seconds earlier. The left rear had come off, hit the TT and almost flipped it. Good thing for equalizer hitches and dual axle trailers! One night in a repair shop, and major repairs the next week. I agree with rule #1. DW is always right!

RE: GPS mounting on windshield is illegal in CA

On page 488, under "Frame and Floor Height" , I really like the quaint term "housecar." Never seen that one in Canadian motor vehicle regs!

RE: So you are afraid to travel in Mexico

I think ZebraGorda's moral of the story was: You can find decent people anywhere on this planet. We've had two major breakdowns in Baja and there were friendly Mexicans bending backwards for us in both cases.

RE: uhhhh..show me something else

Rick, you're right on the money. A used Bigfoot 29G 4x4 is going for $60K on the Bigfoot Owners Club site. Now, you could probably talk him down 5 grand, and you get a vastly superior product for only 10 grand more than a new cheaply constructed model.

RE: uhhhh..show me something else

I wonder how many folks have a Dutchmen story. Years ago, DW bought a barely used TT and one year later the whole back floor and supports had to be replaced due to leaking and really unbelievably shoddy workmanship. The RV repair guy could not believe how this thing was built. Turns out, it was so bad that if she had made an insurance claim right from the the beginning, she would have saved a ton of money. No cheap******ever again.

RE: Tires: guess what I learned!

It seems to me that the biggest enemy of rv tires is long term storage. The natural anti-ageing chemicals embedded in the rubber need to be released by flexing the tire while driving. Another biggie is taking the load off. Buy some blocks.
